Rediscovering Tradition: The Magic of Zambaulim Gulal Utsav 2026

Picture a world where the skies are painted a dusty crimson and the pulsating beat of the Dhol resonates deep within your very being. In the peaceful village of Zambaulim, the air is not just filled with the fragrance of spring—it is also filled with the gravity of a 500-year-old promise. This is the Zambaulim Gulal Utsav, a celebration so fervent and colourful that it shatters all your preconceived notions about Goan culture.

For those of you staying at Hillside Retreat in March 2026, you are but a short drive away from one of the most authentic and spiritually uplifting events in all of India.

Mark Your Calendars: March 2026

The Zambaulim Gulal Utsav is pegged to the Hindu lunar calendar and culminates in a week-long extravaganza. For 2026, the major events are likely to reach their crescendo in the following manner:

Main Gulal Day: Tuesday, March 10, 2026

Venue: Shree Damodar Temple, Zambaulim, South Goa

Note: The events begin several days before with the "Sacred Coconut" procession from Margao. However, on Tuesday, "Gulal" is the day when the village goes red.

A Legacy of 500 Years

The festival is the culmination of the Shigmotsav (spring festival) at the historic Shree Damodar Temple. Its history dates back to the 16th century, when the idol, Lord Damodar, was shifted from Margao to the serene banks of the Kushavati River in Zambaulim to maintain the tradition. Today, the followers, affectionately called Madgaokars, come back every year to pay homage to "Damodar Baba" in a manner that has been unchanged for the last 500 years.

The Experience: A Sea of Red

Unlike the "colour runs" that are a norm in other parts of the world, Gulal Utsav is a spiritual experience. This is how it is different:

·       Palki Procession: The idol of Lord Damodar is placed inside a gorgeously decorated palanquin (Palki) and taken through a sea of devotees.

·       Red Mist: As the Palki proceeds, thousands of devotees fling handfuls of super-fine red powder (Gulal) into the air. This creates a thick, radiant red mist that envelops the temple complex, the devotees, and even the trees that stand in the vicinity of the temple.

·       Kushavati Dip: Later, many devotees take a ritualistic dip in the holy waters of the Kushavati River, which flows right beside the temple.

Visiting from Hillside Retreat

Zambaulim is situated in the Quepem taluka of South Goa. Staying with us at Hillside Retreat gives you the opportunity to experience the vibrant energy of the festival in the daytime and escape into the serene and green hills of the evening.

Quick Tips for Your Visit:

  • Wear "Disposable" Clothes: The gulal is red and very stubborn. Wear light cotton clothes that you don't mind getting stained.

  • Go Early: The traffic around the temple gets very heavy on a Tuesday afternoon. We recommend going early to experience the morning rituals.

  • Respect the Ritual: Although photography is permitted, remember that this is a religious ritual. Be respectful of the devotees and the Palki at all times.

The Zambaulim Gulal Utsav is more than a festival; it is a living part of Goan history. This March, leave the beaches behind and watch the sky turn red in celebration of a tradition that has survived empires.
